# AI Website Template Kartensaum

> The website for travel magazines and blogs that shows the journey to every destination in hours, without flying.

Kartensaum is a complete template for an independent travel magazine with a printed magazine, subscriptions and a newsletter, with 18 pages. At its heart is the journey. The map sheet on the home page places eight destinations on a map of Europe drawn from real coastlines. One click moves the crosshairs to the place, and its card gives the hours from the editorial office door to the trailhead, the route with every change, the nights on the way, the distance as the crow flies and the best months. The same values feed the seasonal calendar across twelve months, the bar chart on the journeys page and the facts of every story. Plus six long-form stories in six formats with a location map and a chart in numbers, six protected areas and their rules, six pieces of kit bought with our own money in a long-term test, a pack weight calculator, a walking time calculator to DIN 33466, daylight by latitude, an archive of fourteen issues, printed magazine and subscription, the Kartenpost with a preview, the editorial team as initials and legal pages written as a guide for magazines with print and newsletter.

## FAQ

**Where do the hours in the map sheet come from?**

They are rounded guide values from the 2026 timetables, counted from the editorial office door in Freiburg to the first step on the trail, and the line under the map says so. Every destination carries its hours, the nights on the way and the route with every change under orte in src/data/site.ts. The template works out the distance as the crow flies itself from the coordinates. Night trains and summer buses do not run every day, so you check every connection again before going live.

**How do I add a new destination?**

With an entry under orte in src/data/site.ts, with name, country, coordinates, hours, nights on the way, route, a sentence, an image and twelve monthly values. From that come the marker and the place card in the map sheet and the row in the seasonal calendar, and with a reise field also the entry on the journeys page with image, text and route points. The map shows Europe between Portugal and Lapland. For a destination outside it, your AI generates a new section from Natural Earth in src/data/europa.ts.

**Our editorial office is not in Freiburg. What changes?**

The coordinates and town of the office sit once in src/data/site.ts under marke. From them the map sheet, the location map and the rings on the journeys page work out the distance as the crow flies again. You enter the hours and routes for each destination yourself, because trains run differently from Hamburg or Vienna. Your AI also finds every place where Freiburg appears in the text.

**What does the seasonal calendar show?**

All eight destinations across twelve months, each field marked as best time, good or rather not. A click on a month highlights its column, and a line above it names the destinations that suit it best. The values sit under monate in src/data/site.ts for each destination, and the map sheet uses them to name the best months on every place card. Without JavaScript the calendar appears as a complete table, with the line for the month of the build already filled in.

**How are the six stories built?**

Each has its own format with its own opening, report, walking route, adventure, long-term test, coast and water. All of them carry a standfirst, facts, sections with subheadings, a quote, three captioned images, a chart in numbers and further reading, five of them also the journey from Freiburg, the best months and a location map. The texts run to 375 to 575 words. A new story is one entry under geschichten in src/data/site.ts.

**How is Kartensaum different from Wegwild and Kehrwelt?**

Wegwild and Kehrwelt sell trips, with dates, prices and sign-up. Kartensaum tells and plans journeys that readers make on their own. A magazine or travel blog lives here from stories, printed magazine, subscriptions and newsletter, and the heart is the journey without flying, in hours. If you guide tours yourself, take Wegwild. If you offer cycling holidays, take Kehrwelt.

**Can I sell issues and subscriptions directly on the site?**

There is no shop built in. The buttons for a single issue, the magazine subscription and the supporter subscription lead to the contact form with the request type subscription, and the editors confirm by hand. Selling subscriptions online in Germany needs a cancellation button under § 312k BGB (German Civil Code) and a notice on the right of withdrawal. Your AI connects a shop or subscription service for that and adds it to the privacy policy and the consent banner.

**How does the Kartenpost work?**

The sign-up sits on the home page and on Get involved, each time with a preview of the last edition. The form checks the address and then shows a confirmation that says plainly the template sends nothing yet. Nothing is sent until your AI connects a newsletter service with double opt-in. Reader count, editions and start date sit once under kartenpost in src/data/site.ts.

**How do pack weight and walking time work out?**

The pack weight calculator on the gear page adds food for each day without a shop, water and, if you eat hot meals, gas to the base weight of 7.9 kg, the sum of the weight breakdown. The walking time calculator in the guides works like German trail signposts to DIN 33466, with four kilometres an hour, 300 metres of ascent and 500 of descent per hour, the smaller time counting half, plus around 15 per cent for breaks if you want. Both calculate in src/lib/rechnen.ts, in the browser just as at build time, so without JavaScript they show the result of their default values, 12.4 kg and 7 hrs 22 min.

**Do I have to label gear tests as advertising?**

As the template shows them, they are free of advertising. The tests name no brands, every piece was bought with the magazine’s own money, there are no loans and no links to retailers, and the page says so. As soon as you add affiliate links, accept loans or get paid for a piece, you label it as advertising and adjust the line about affiliate links. These notes are not legal advice.

**What belongs in the legal notice of a magazine?**

The legal notice is written as a guide. It names the details required under § 5 DDG (Germany), the person responsible for editorial content under § 18 (2) MStV, the German Interstate Media Treaty, and the imprint of the printed magazine under the press law of the German state where the publisher is based, in the example Baden-Württemberg. The privacy policy covers the newsletter, forms, subscriptions and shipping. Check your own case before going live, these notes are not legal advice.

**May I advertise with travelling without flying?**

Yes, because it is a concrete fact anyone can check. The template says how the editors travel and calculates no emissions. Broad environmental claims such as climate friendly or sustainable are left out on purpose, because since 27 September 2026 they need precise proof in the EU. Printed on recycled paper is something you back up in real life, for instance with an eco label.

**Does this work for a travel blog run by one person?**

Yes, with a small rebuild. Your AI turns the editorial team into one person, takes out printed magazine and subscription or keeps only the newsletter, and keeps the map sheet, seasonal calendar, stories and guides. For a small editorial team with a printed magazine the structure works as it is.

**Does it work with travel by car or by plane?**

Technically yes, the fields for hours and route take any kind of journey. The stance of travelling without flying runs through many texts, though, from the editorial principles to the questions on Get involved. Your AI finds those places and rewrites them for the way you travel.

**Does the site work without JavaScript?**

Yes. Every heading and every text is there without a script. The map sheet shows all eight place cards one below the other, the seasonal calendar appears as a table, the calculators show the result of their default values, tests and request types appear as lists, accordions stay open, and the phone menu opens through a jump target.

**Are the names, figures and people real?**

No. Magazine, editorial team, reader numbers, prices, issues, readers’ letters and experiences are made up, and the footer of every page says so, while quotes and letters carry the mark Example quote or Example letter. The places, national parks, stations, trains and ferries are real, and travel times and rules are researched as of 2026. The address in Vauban is an example, and the phone number comes from the range the German Federal Network Agency keeps free for media.

**Can I keep the photos?**

The 46 photos come from Pexels under the Pexels licence, and none is generated by AI. They show neither the editorial team nor the trips in the stories, and some stand for a landscape without showing the named place. Where people appear, they are seen from behind, small in the frame or only as hands, and there is no model release. src/data/bildnachweis.ts and the legal notice name the photographer of every image.

**Why is the editorial team shown without photos?**

Because no stock photo should stand next to a real name. The four people appear as initial plaques with their role, and your own team photos belong in that spot. Readers’ letters and voices appear without faces.

**Does the site load anything from third party servers?**

No. Archivo sits as a font in public/fonts/, the photos in the project, and the map of Europe and the location maps are drawn from Natural Earth and need no map service. The browser runs its own JavaScript without a library, around 6 KB gzipped. The cookie banner writes the choice to the dataLayer, and statistics and marketing are not linked to any service.

**Are search engines and share images prepared?**

Yes. Every page has its own title, description and breadcrumbs, the magazine carries the NewsMediaOrganization schema, every story Article with author, date and word count, the protected areas Park, the editorial team AboutPage, and the questions on Guides, Get involved and Contact FAQPage. Astro builds the share images at 1200 by 630 pixels from a photo of each page. Legal notice, privacy policy and 404 are set to noindex and left out of the sitemap.

**Which form of address does the template use?**

Informal you throughout, and the editors speak as we. The content sits in src/data/site.ts, the sentences of scripts, forms and the consent banner in src/data/texte.ts. Your AI switches to a formal tone if your magazine prefers it.

**Is the site included in English too?**

Yes. In the English package the whole website is in English, with an English knowledge layer and English skills. Figures, hours and month names appear in the language of the page.

**Where can I host the site?**

Anywhere static files may live. Astro builds the site into a folder of finished HTML that you upload to your host. Before that, your AI sets your own domain in astro.config.mjs and robots.txt, and the website derives every other address from it.

**Do I own the template?**

Yes. Pay once, yours for good, for your own projects and client projects. You get the complete source code without a watermark.

**Do I need to know how to code?**

No. You tell your AI in the project folder what should change, and it finds the spot through CLAUDE.md and the seven skills. If you want to work on it yourself, destinations, stories, protected areas, tests and subscriptions sit in src/data/site.ts.
