How to care for oak furniture through the winter

Dry heating air pulls moisture out of solid wood. Three habits keep a table calm until spring.

Keep the room between 40 and 60 percent humidity

Oak moves with the air around it. Below 40 percent the boards shrink and small cracks open along the grain. A bowl of water on the radiator or a simple humidifier is often enough. A hygrometer costs less than a cup of coffee a month and tells you when to act.

Oil once in November, not every month

A thin coat of hard wax oil in late autumn closes the surface before the heating season. Work it in with a cotton cloth, wait twenty minutes and polish off what the wood did not take. More oil does not mean more protection, it leaves a sticky film that collects dust.

Move the table a little away from the radiator

Direct heat dries one side faster than the other, and a top can cup within weeks. Forty centimetres of distance are enough. If that is not possible, a runner across the warm side evens out the drying.

When to call us

A crack that grows over a week, a leg that suddenly wobbles or a joint that opens are signs that the wood needs more than care. Send us a photo, we answer within one working day and tell you honestly if a repair is worth it.
