AI Website for Small Business, a Practical Guide for Owners
An AI website for a small business is an ordinary website that you build and keep changing with the help of an AI tool, either inside a website builder or by chatting with an AI coding tool over a finished template. Which route fits depends on two things, what you want to spend over three years and how comfortable you are with a folder of files.
| Route | Skill you need | Cost over three years | Time to online | Who owns the site |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI website builder (Wix, Squarespace) | None | from around $600 in plan fees | 1 to 2 days | The provider, you rent |
| Chatbot and copy-paste | Basic HTML and patience | Hosting, plus a chat plan if you pay for one | 3 to 10 days | You, without a system |
| Industry template with an AI coding tool (our template) | Two terminal commands, then plain English | €99 once, plus hosting | One working day | You, completely |
| AI Website Service (our service) | None, you send your content | €899 once, plus hosting | 1 to 2 weeks | You, completely |
| Freelancer or agency | None | €1,500 to €25,000, plus maintenance | 3 to 12 weeks | You, if the contract says so |
For most small businesses, the best AI website is a finished industry template that you adapt by chatting with an AI tool, or a website builder if you never want to see a file. Budget decides the rest. Builders cost little to start and more every year, a template costs once and the code stays yours.
We build websites for plumbers, practices, cafés and coaches, and we sell templates for them. So read this guide knowing that we have a stake in one of the routes. We name the weak spots of our own route as well, and we say plainly when another one fits better.
Which route fits your budget and skill
The table above sets the five routes side by side. Two questions sort them quickly. Do you want to own the website, or is renting fine? And will you open a folder on your computer, or should everything happen in a browser?
You never want to see a file, choose a builder
Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy Airo and IONOS all generate a first draft from a short description of your business. Within minutes there is a site with images, copy and a contact form. For many owners that is the moment the project becomes real.
After the draft, you are back to clicking by hand. The AI assistant does not build a new service page in the style of the existing ones, and the site stays on the provider’s platform. Wix starts at $17 a month and Squarespace at around $16, both billed yearly, as of October 2026. That is $600 or more over three years with nothing of your own at the end. A builder fits a one-person business that changes its website twice a year.
You can open a folder and type a sentence, choose a template
An AI website in our sense is a finished site built so that an AI tool can edit it. Our AI website templates are complete industry websites in Astro, each with a guideline file, a knowledge folder with writing style and SEO plan, and seven Skills. You open the folder in an AI coding tool such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, GitHub Copilot or Windsurf and change the whole site by chat. A new service page then looks like the rest, because the rules are written down.
You pay €99 once, the code is yours forever and it runs on any hosting. The honest limits are three. There is no drag and drop editor, there is no booking engine built in, and you need an AI coding tool and a hosting account. If you take appointments online, you link your existing booking tool from the site.
You have no time at all, hand it off
If you would rather spend the day with customers, our AI Website Service does the same work for you. You pick a template, send your texts in bullet points, your logo and a few photos, and we build them in, set up domain and hosting with your own provider and take the site live. It costs €899 once, includes four weeks of support, and afterwards everything belongs to you.
You need something nobody sells, hire an agency
A shop with two thousand products, a booking logic for twelve rooms with different seasons, a connection to your practice software. That is custom work, and a freelancer starts at around €1,500 while an agency usually lands at €5,000 and more. Our AI website cost guide breaks the numbers down.
What your website must contain
Visitors to a small business site arrive with one question and leave within seconds if the first screen does not answer it. A plumber’s visitor asks whether you come today. A café’s visitor asks whether you are open now. Everything else follows from that.
- What you do and where, in the first screen. “Plumber in Leeds, emergency call-outs until 10 pm” works. “Your partner for comfort” works for nobody.
- A price or a price range. Owners fear it, customers look for it first. A fixed price for the common jobs and a range for the rest filters out the wrong enquiries.
- Proof. Photos of your real work, your real team and your real room. Reviews with first names, the year you started, certificates that matter in your trade.
- One clear next step. A phone number you can tap, an enquiry form with three fields or a link to your booking tool. One, not four.
- Opening hours and contact details that match your Google Business Profile letter for letter. Different hours on two pages cost trust and local rankings.
- One page per service. People search for “boiler service price”, not for “services”. Each page answers one search.
- Your legal pages, see the next section.
Each trade puts the weight somewhere else. A trades business sells on price and response time, which is why Klarlauf names six fixed prices and the call-out fee before anyone dials. A practice sells on trust, so Bendrath carries a therapist profile and articles that answer real questions. A café sells the visit, and Mummel shows today’s opening and the next tray out of the oven. A coach sells on proof, which is why Klarstand has three case pages. The categories for trades, health, cafés and coaching list all the others.
The legal pages, a neutral note
What a website must carry by law depends on where you do business, and we are not your lawyers. A few rules apply widely. In the EU and the UK, a contact form or analytics tool already processes personal data, so you need a privacy notice, and non-essential cookies or tracking need consent before they load. Germany and Austria also require a legal notice with your name, address and contact details. In the US there is no general federal rule, but California requires a privacy policy from commercial sites that collect personal data from its residents, and other states have followed.
Do not let an AI invent legal text. It writes something that sounds right and cites rules that do not exist. Use a generator run by lawyers or have a professional check it. Our templates ship the legal pages as placeholders with instructions, not as finished legal text, on purpose.
A one-day plan with a template and an AI tool
This plan assumes you have chosen the template route and that your content exists somewhere, even if only in your head and in old flyers. Block a full day and turn off the phone for the first half.
Morning, collect and set up
Pick your template in your category and buy it. Then collect what only you can provide. Your logo, five to ten real photos, your services with prices, opening hours, three reviews you may quote, and your legal details. Install an AI coding tool, unpack the ZIP and open the folder. The start guide in the folder walks you through the setup.
Late morning, make it yours
Tell the tool to read the guideline file and the knowledge folder first. Then give it your facts in one go. “Replace the sample business with mine. We are a heating firm in Leeds with four staff, these are our six services and prices, these are our hours.” Let it rewrite the home page, then each service page. Paste your notes as bullet points, the Skills turn them into copy in the tone the site already has.
Afternoon, check what the AI wrote
Read every page on your phone, out loud if you can. Check every price, every phone number and every opening time against your own records, because an AI fills gaps with plausible numbers. Then run two free checks. Our AI design check shows whether the site still looks like a default, and the AEO check shows whether AI search can read and quote it. Our guide on whether an AI website is good for SEO explains what the results mean.
Evening, go live
Open a hosting account, upload the built site and connect your domain. Send yourself a test enquiry through the form. Fill in the legal pages with the text from your generator or your lawyer. Last step, put the new address into your Google Business Profile and your email signature. If something breaks, the documentation that comes with the template covers the usual causes.
Where AI helps and where it does not
AI is fast at turning your bullet points into readable copy, at building a new page in the style of the existing ones, at translating the site and at the hundred small changes a year that used to cost an email to the web designer. It does not know your prices, your reviews, the warranty you give or the parking situation in front of your shop. Those facts are the reason a customer chooses you, and they have to come from you.
AI is also the reason so many small business sites now look alike. Our guide on how to tell if a website is AI generated lists the defaults to avoid, and the list of AI website examples shows sites that avoided them.
When to hire our done-for-you service
Use a simple rule. Count how many of these three sentences are true for you.
- You have never opened a code editor and you do not want to start now.
- An hour of your time with customers earns more than the time a website would cost you.
- You need the site live within two weeks, and your content lives in your head rather than in documents.
Three yes, book the service. One or none, build it yourself with a template, you will save the difference and learn how to change your own site. Two is a judgement call. It is the same code either way, so you can start with the service and make every later change yourself by chat.
In short
A builder is the quickest start and the most expensive in the long run. A chatbot with copy-paste is cheap and gets tedious at the second page. A finished template with an AI coding tool gives you a complete website for €99 once that you own and change by chat. If you have no time, hand the template to us. Whatever you choose, the website wins on your prices, your photos and your next step, not on the tool.
Frequently asked questions
For an owner who never wants to open a file, Wix and Squarespace are the safest builders, with plans from around $16 to $18 a month billed yearly. For an owner who wants to own the site and change it by chat, a finished industry template with an AI coding tool fits better, because you pay once and the code is yours.
A builder plan runs from around $600 over three years for as long as the site exists. A finished template costs €99 once, plus hosting and a domain at roughly $5 to $15 a month. A done-for-you build starts at €899, a freelancer or agency at €1,500 and can reach five figures.
Yes, if your content is ready. With a finished template the design, the pages and the structure already stand, so the day goes into your texts, photos, prices and legal details. Without your content in hand, plan two to three days, because the writing takes longer than the building.
In the EU and the UK, almost always, because a contact form or analytics already processes personal data. In Germany and Austria a legal notice with name and address is required as well. In the US there is no general federal rule, but California and several other states require a privacy policy once you collect personal data from their residents.
They notice defaults, not origin. A purple gradient, a hero line that fits every competitor and three identical cards make any site look generic. Real photos, your own prices and specific sentences make an AI-built site look like yours.
No. With a builder you click, with a template you type sentences like “add a page for boiler maintenance with my prices” into an AI coding tool. You do need to be comfortable opening a folder and running two commands in a terminal.
