How it works and process steps

How it works, from four steps in a row to a rail that fills while you scroll.

Three to five steps, in order

A process section answers how it works, and it lowers the effort a visitor expects before the first contact. The seven layouts here show three to six steps with a number, a title and a sentence, and they keep the order clear for screen readers as an ordered list.

Horizontal steps and Compact fit three or four short steps under the features. Cards gives each step a little more text. Vertical timeline and Centered rail suit longer processes such as a renovation or an onboarding, the rail fills as you scroll. Big numbers works for bold brand pages, With images when each step has something to show.

Start each step with a verb, such as Book, Meet, Receive. Say what the visitor does and what you do, so the division of work is clear. Three steps are easier to remember than six, merge steps when you can.

Accessibility

Read from the source of the component.

  • Adds text for screen readers where icons and graphics stand alone.
  • The server renders the starting state in full, JavaScript only adds the interaction.

Motion

  • Rises in briefly the first time it comes into view (kit-rise, useInView).
  • Moves with the scroll, its progress follows the position on the page.
  • Brings animations of its own, calmly timed and without wobble.
  • With reduced motion (prefers-reduced-motion) it stays still. 6 places in the code switch motion off then.
