How to Build a Law Firm Website, What Lawyers Really Need in 2026
Clients search under pressure, often at night and almost always on their phone. This guide shows how a law firm website has to be structured so that search turns into a call, and what to watch for legally along the way.
A law firm website starts from an unusual position. The visitor is already convinced they need help. They are usually tense, often in a hurry, and at that moment they are comparing two or three firms. So the website does not have to sell. Its job is to prove and to clear the way.
This guide walks through what that takes.
How it differs from other websites
Most business websites are about sparking interest. For law firms, it is about being the obvious choice in a situation that is already stressful. Three things follow from that.
Reachability beats design. A visible phone number brings in more cases than any imagery.
Specific beats complete. “We advise in all areas of law” is weaker than “Focus on employment law, for eighteen years”.
People beat the institution. Clients hire a person. Real portraits with a career history are stronger than any firm logo.
The page structure
This structure has proven itself.
- Home page. What the firm stands for, the practice areas at a glance, the lawyers, a clear way to get in touch.
- One page per practice area. This is the most important point for visibility. If you want to be found for employment law, you need a page about employment law that answers the typical questions.
- One profile per lawyer. Career, focus areas, year of admission, photo. Publications and talks are welcome too.
- About the firm. History, values, location with directions.
- Contact. Phone number, address, hours you can be reached, form. If needed, a separate path for urgent cases.
- Legal notice.
- Privacy policy.
Firms with eight practice areas end up with about nineteen pages this way. That sounds like a lot and is the normal case.
What goes on a practice area page
These pages decide your visibility. The structure that works looks like this.
The client’s situation first. Not “We advise on employment law” but the concrete situation, a dismissal notice received, a formal warning in the mailbox, a settlement agreement on the table.
Then the typical questions. What happens now, which deadlines are running, what it costs. Deadlines are the strongest reason someone calls right away.
Then the firm’s approach. In three to four steps, without jargon.
Then the responsible lawyer. With a photo and a link to their profile.
Finally the way to make contact. On every single practice area page, not only on the contact page.
Deadlines and reachability
In some areas of law, hours matter. Criminal law, immigration law and in part employment law are among them. If your firm works in these areas, the website needs a visible path for urgent cases, with a clear statement of what happens behind it. An emergency number without explanation creates expectations nobody can meet.
A short, honest statement of availability helps here. “Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm, and outside those hours in custody matters” is better than a blanket promise.
Required disclosures
For a firm in Germany, more applies here than for other websites. Besides the legal notice (Impressum) and the privacy policy, you need to include
- the professional title and the country that granted it
- the responsible regional bar (Rechtsanwaltskammer)
- the professional rules with their source, usually BRAO, BORA, RVG and the Code of Conduct for European Lawyers
- details of the professional indemnity insurance
- the VAT identification number
- a note on dispute resolution before the arbitration board of the German bar (Schlichtungsstelle der Rechtsanwaltschaft)
Specialist lawyer titles (Fachanwalt) may only be used by those who have been awarded them, and they must be named correctly. The firm should review this whole block itself or have it reviewed. No provider and no AI takes this responsibility off your hands, and a generator does not know your bar.
Three ways to a finished website
Website builder. Wix or Squarespace, €11 to €25 a month. Enough for a solo practice with two focus areas. With eight practice areas, upkeep gets tedious, and the website stays in the provider’s system.
Agency. €4,000 to €15,000, six to eight weeks. Concept, text and photos come from the same team, and in return every later change is a new job.
Finished template. A complete law firm website with all practice area pages and profiles, bought once and adapted to your own firm through chat. The code belongs to the firm, hosting is your choice, and later changes are described in the chat.
For law firms, the deciding question is usually not the price. It is who will be able to update a phone number or add a new colleague in two years without hiring a service provider.
After launch
Google Business Profile. More important for law firms than for most others, because many clients search locally. Keep address, hours and practice areas up to date.
Set up Search Console. Submit the sitemap so the practice area pages get found at all.
Watch the practice area pages. Which ones bring enquiries and which do not. Often the weak page is only missing a concrete opening into the client’s situation.

Frequently asked questions
Name and address, legal form and authorized representatives, contact details, the professional title with the country that granted it, the responsible regional bar (Rechtsanwaltskammer), the applicable professional rules with their source and the VAT identification number. Details of the professional indemnity insurance belong there too. The firm should review this part itself.
Advertising is allowed in Germany as long as it informs factually about the professional work. Sensational self-promotion is not allowed, and statements about success rates are risky. Specific case descriptions without client details and without promises of success are the safe route.
A template costs €89 to €100 once, a website builder €130 to €200 a year, and an agency build between €4,000 and €15,000. The bigger effort almost always goes into text and photos, not into the technology.
Yes. Clients search for their problem, not for the firm, and Google can only rank what has its own address. A catch-all page with eight bullet points ranks for none of the eight topics.
Fast enough that nobody leaves. Someone looking for a criminal defense lawyer at night will not wait five seconds. The phone number should be visible without scrolling and dialable with one tap.
