What Zed does with the UI Kit

Zed calls MCP servers context servers and keeps them in settings.json. Three lines with the address of the UI Kit are enough, and the agent panel can search 350 components, read their code, plan a website and review a page.

Zed is fast and quiet, and the kit fits that. The agent asks for exactly what it needs, a variant here, the theme tokens there, and writes the result into your project without a detour.

The server only reads and needs no account. Your project stays in Zed, the agent only sends its questions to the kit, such as the search for a contact form.

  • Fetches exactly the variant it needs with get_variant
  • Applies theme tokens and accents with get_theme
  • Reviews a page in place with review_page

Connect Zed in 3 steps

The pictures show where to click. Menu names can shift a little with new versions, the way stays the same.

  1. Step 1, Open settings.json

    Open the settings of Zed with Ctrl comma, on a Mac with Cmd comma, or run zed: open settings from the command palette.

  2. Step 2, Add the context server

    Zed calls MCP servers context servers. Add the entry under context_servers.

  3. Step 3, Check the agent panel

    In the settings of the agent panel the server shows a green dot. The agent now uses its tools.

Tips

When it sticks

The dot stays grey
Check that the entry sits under context_servers and that settings.json is valid JSON. Zed shows parse errors at the top of the file.
The agent does not call the tools
Use a profile in the agent panel that allows tools, such as Write.

Overview of the MCP server
Why context servers?

That is the name Zed gives MCP servers. The entry works like an MCP server in any other client.

Can the server write files into my project?

The public server only reads. Your assistant writes the files itself, or you add the local server of the aiw CLI with npx -y ai-website mcp, which installs components with your approval.

Does the server see my code or my chats?

No. Your assistant only sends the question it asks the kit, such as a search for a pricing section. The server answers and stores nothing from the request.

What does the MCP server cost?

Nothing. The server, the components and the CLI are free, the code is under the MIT license. You pay only for the AI assistant you already use.
